Signing Your Return

You must sign your tax return before the IRS will accept it - if you don't, the document will probably be returned to you so you can sign it. Make sure that both spouses sign the return if you're filing jointly. Not to mention the fact that the IRS will refuse to issue a refund unless the return is properly signed.

If you are filing a return for a minor child, sign the child's name, and add "By (your signature), parent (or guardian) for minor child." The parent who signs the child's return will be authorized to deal with the IRS if any questions arise about the return.

If you are filing your return electronically, you must sign the return by using a five-digit personal identification number (PIN) that you select for yourself.
