Employment Reference Rules in Missouri

Employers in Missouri must comply with these state rules on providing service letters for former employees.

In Missouri, corporations having seven or more employees must provide service letters to a former employee who worked for at least 90 days.

The former employee must request the letter in writing within a reasonable period after he or she left the business.

The letter, which must be issued within 45 days of the request, must state:

• the nature and character of the services rendered
• employment dates
• for what cause, if any, the employee quit or was discharged
